Dorothy, after
Depression, dust bowl,
war and widowhood
made that long-past storm
and fever dream
just one more entry
in a catalog of miseries.
Still, she’d got Miss Gulch’s job
when that old battleaxe retired,
but, yes, she was a little overweight,
lines crinkled up her face,
her hair more grey than anything.
But as she walked
the dirt road back from town
into the flat horizon Saturday
her shopping bag contained
a smart new pair of ruby heels
and matching lipstick.
